You're right that all of our computing is a drain on the environment. But computers are incredibly enmeshed into our society now. If we went back and used old technology... I suspect something would happen along the lines of the economic impact of COVID. When China ceased production for a bit to quarantine. Ceasing business production also means they stopped using many of the computers they use for work.

And we're still feeling the aftermath of COVID, with inflation skyrocketing, the quality of products getting shittier and shittier. There were also good and bad environmental effects from all of that. I remember reading somewhere that computers at this point are like an extension of ourselves. So it's gotten to the point where cutting off our current computing power is like cutting off an arm.

Of course someday, I hope we find a way to reduce computer's impact on the environment, and make the technology more accessible to people. Much of the world doesn't have the USA's high tech computing power. I remember reading somewhere that poorer nations are still using nokia flip phones and stuff from the 00s.

interesting, the problem seems to go both ways. new games require new hardware, but lots of old games require old hardware. or at least a lot of additional hoops to jump through to emulate them on new hardware

makes you realize how fleeting this artform is. its not pigments sitting on a canvas that will last indefinitely, they rely on relatively fragile/ephemeral platforms to be able to experience them

"a lot of additional hoops to jump through to emulate them on new hardware" right. ps2 or n64 emulation comes to mind. difficult to get it working corecly. or even old pc games. so many hoops to jump trough. espessialy if you don't know the hoops you need to jump through. yeah it really is so fragile. i mean a painting is fragile, but a game. so much more. i guess one could say "accsept the fragility".

but one could also say "make it as strudy as possible". "so it lasts as long as possible". probebly somwhere in the middle. i guess computer art is still "new". historicaly. i wonder what computational art will look like 50years from now. will platforms and formats become more stable??
