i feel so old. most creatures of the earth will never live for so long as I have. most of them will never have a chance to learn what i've been able to. a year... well, that's really a long time. eighty. maybe I will be eighty someday, or sixty. in that time, probably more ants than people who have ever lived will die.

at five years, a deer reaches maturity. in the forest, the world is reduced to square miles. would the things I know matter to him? or are there things he learns, in those first five years, greater and more valuable than anything I have discovered in my great time?
