Ever since I started doing some research into Nehalennia last year, I've been wanting to study Greek and Roman mythology - what is interesting is the blending of deities at the lost temples in the Netherlands of what is (presumably) a Germanic or Celtic goddess with Greek/Roman ones. Is Ancient Germanic and Greek/Roman culture as separate as we think, or was Snorri on to something when connected Ancient Greek and

Norse culture? Archeological evidence is more substantial than written evidence alone, since mistakes can be made from it, so studying Greek and Roman myth has become relevant.

Things to avoid in Urban Fantasy: Inappropriate uses of swords and other pre-gunpowder weapons, clichéd descriptions of 'sexy' men and women and 'sexy' things they get up to, nightclubs...

An author can make an intriguing world, but these things are silly and combined with confusing writing and unfamiliar magic systems make your world unbelievable.

We lost our Colin and Max to IMHA. It's an awful disease for dogs to get. We can't help with the research because our current dog is not the breed that they are looking for, but I am posting this in case anyone has a cocker spaniel that is eligible to take part. https://friedlab.org/participate/imha_genetics_cockers/

sorry for your loss :(

Last May, there was the incident in the Troth, where Diana Paxon was removed from being an elder because of her association with Marion Zimmer Bradley. There was a huge ruckus over it. (I was concerned about her when I bought one of her books for the Troth's Heathen Essentials course...) It has been known for some while that Neil Gaiman has had allegations made against him, and this week he has faced charges over his

conduct, but one thing I have noticed is that no one in the online groups I follow has even brought the situation with Gaiman up. So, I'm just mentioning it here again so folks don't forget about it...

Some fools release four lynx in Scotland and now we have these false stories coming out of the wood work... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/clyz22q2j32o There would have been more evidence by now.
I'm currently wrapping up my reading from last year as there are a few books that I started reading/listening to in December that I didn't quite finish before the turning of the year... This obviously as impacted my reading plans, and Curse of the Mistwraith took longer to get through than I thought it would. I have mixed feelings about that book, really - it's much wordier than necessary and would have benefited

from some editing, especially in the first half of the book. Do I like it to continue reading the series? I'm not sure, but I do like the Arithon character, so I might. I have The Living Force to finish, and the Burning Land to finish listening to. I've started reading Kelley Armstrong's Disturbing the Dead, and I've remembered that I read The Poisoner's Ring last year, but that was before I started recording what I

was reading so I've missed the cover. I've lost my enthusiasm for Listening Books because they couldn't get the first two of the Seven Kennings books due to copyright issues which is quite disappointing because of the font size the paperbacks are set in. I'll probably have to get the kindle versions of it.

So, what are my plans now? I have an omnibus edition of the next Hornblower books - Hornblower and the Atropos, The Happy Return and A Ship of the Line. I have a couple of vet books on order from the library - one's the third part in a biography and one is one of those chick lit romance type books (they are relatable for me because of the animal care stuff in it - I might not be in the industry due to health issues,

but I find the people in them relatable, so I shall be reading those when they come through.

Cool user name.

For the past two or three weeks, it's been freezing here and one of the problems with it is you go out to do the shopping for a couple of hours and then spend the rest of the time trying to warm up again, but you still feel frozen several hours later.

One thing I'll never understand is why people think that chunky books are always good pieces of work. If the story is over descriptive to the point where the ability of the reader to follow the story is lost, if the story dull, if the author expects the reader to understand the world building of the story without clear explanation, then it's not a good story.

Sometimes, editors, beta readers, proof readers, etc, need to be more ruthless and honest in their assessment of the book before publication.

Is literary fiction an actual type of fiction, or is it just a label that 'academics' put on certain works of fiction to make it appear superior to all other fiction books?

I got a little bored reading The Living Force, so I started The Curse of the Mistwraith. I don't know if it's because I started reading The Living Force and then abandoned it because of the eye infection, or if I just don't like the book that much - it's a bit dull, tbh. The only thing that I like about it is that it has the Jedi Council in it prior to The Phantom Menace - I think a story following a couple of them -

on a more interesting mission would have been a better read. It doesn't justify being published in hardback so I'm glad that I borrowed it and got a cheap kindle copy.

The Curse of the Mistwraith is a much longer book and the length of it was a bit off putting - I hope I get through it fully before it needs to go back in January - I don't want to keep it longer than that if I can help it.

But I am liking it more.

I've decided not to do the reading challenge website - I'm doing a physical reading journal instead. I just couldn't find a way of doing the link buttons in a way that I liked. It would be nice to find a group of people that like reading books - not a 'book club' where everyone reads the same book at the same time, but a group of people that like similar genres so that you can talk about them, and which meets in real

life at the library or something. (I don't do pubs because drinking and spending money becomes the focus, not what you meet for, and I don't like evening meetings.)

I've been lucky lately in my finding books at the RSPCA shop. Latest haul was some David Gemmell hardbacks and some Ian Rankin. (I don't read them, but my partner does so I get them while I'm there.) I usually tend to get all the fantasy that they have donated that I see, unless it's YA, Paranormal Romance (I know that I like Urban Fantasy, but I prefer UF that has more fantasy in it than romance/sex/etc, because -

that bores the heck out of me), and George R. R. Martin. ASOIAF is pretty gross, tbh and I don't want to read his other books incase they are the same.

Ah joy! It's nice of the flu to bring back that bloody leg muscle problem!
You can tell the fickle fans that jump on band wagons are out in force again. For ages, LOTR was ignored, but now there is a new film out they've all come out of the wood work. Half of them will be complaining about the film, half of them will be harassing others for liking it/not being 'true fans!' in their minds, and half will be harassing folks for not being LGBTQ...
bright-eyes 3 months ago

And half will be trying to get people to post inappropriate sexting under the guise of 'Roleplaying!' as a substitute for real relationships.

bright-eyes 3 months ago

These folks ruined the fandom last time.

bright-eyes 3 months ago

You'll probably be wondering why I say 'half' as it exceeds the whole, but there is some over-lap with all these types of 'fans'.

Not counting Watership Down, the James Herriot books and Lotr, as I've read them before, the best books this year have been the Marie Brennen books (Lady Trent, in particular), the Emily Wilde books, the Katherine Addison books and the Meghan Lindholm books. The worst? The Scholomance and Echoes of the Runes.
bright-eyes 3 months ago

I would say that the Scholomance were the biggest disappointment because I have waited quite a while to read them and wasn't able to read them because I couldn't get them when they first came out. What's also made them disappointing was that I expected better from the author since I liked the Temeriare books so much.

I've started reading Wolf's Brother - I get quite a lot of Jean M. Auel vibes from this duology, though without the erotica, which in some ways is probably a good thing.

Although I am only a three chapters in, I think it's better than The Reindeer People as it seems to be a faster read, and I'm not getting tired reading it, which unfortunately, I found was a problem with The Reindeer People.
