Just recently got around to reading that book. It was absolutely amazing. It was really depressing but the writing and storytelling was vivid and really well done. Only thing that was kinda annoying was that long dragged out part in which youre essentially reading a book inside a book.

For sure. Any sort of writing helps. Even if it doesn't end up being your thing, it's always a good exercise in grammar and sentence structure. (Also 'exercise', 'grammar', and 'sentence' are words I still cannot spell correctly to this day. )
Kinda tough to come up with a solid story but it can be kinda fun so I'd say go for it
