In a nutshell, he was a highly intelligent, Harvard educated guy who dropped out of society and became a serial killer by sending letter bombs to people's mailboxes. He wrote a long manifesto describing the nature of modern society and its fuckedupness - a lot of which was spot on, which is why some people respect him. But at the end of the day, he was a serial killer who destroyed a number of people's lives.
