The black text on a white background takes me back to the good old days. I wish I knew how to make a light mode/dark mode switch on my page.
I think I almost prefer it to my default dark mode. I have no idea how to make a switch but using @media feels like a decent compromise.
wow, thank you! likewise on your site’s elegantly functional design! read through several of your essays with interest (: anticipating yours on consumerism!
Your site's one of the few I don't usually use reader mode on, funny enough. It's not overly busy visually and the text width is good, so it's easy for me to follow. I only ever flip it on for you when dark mode really isn't working for me that day. (Incidentally, if you added a @media (prefers-color-scheme) light mode, I'd be thrilled).
Yeah I try to keep things simple and accessible. Implementing light/dark mode @media preferences was on my to-do list, so you can probably expect to see that pretty soon :-)
Years ago I read Sven Birkets, The Gutenberg Elegies which is quoted on my reviewer profile page on our website. Back in the 90s Birkets was concerned about the impact of electronic media on reading and how books will be written and marketed, but I don’t think he ever imagined one AI reading another AI’s books to generate clicks and cash on Amazon. Is this crazy, or am I just getting old?
It's pretty wild, though "reading" might not be the right term here. On a side note, interesting book. I'm assuming it's probably dated in parts but I might have to keep an eye out next time I head to the library/bookstore.
It is dated on many technological issues, but I think it is philosophically still relevant
Perhaps it’s just me who doesn’t work with phones because I had to repost and edit this like three times.
I've done a lot of my new visual overhaul on my phone, but I don't think I'll ever do it again. Not voluntarily, anyway.
I had similar issues when I tried. It was to the point of copying it into a regular text editor to make changes, then pasting the altered version back.
Might be of help, at least for stopping automated bot scraping (if they're going to do it, make them do it manually!): https://neil-clarke.com/block-the-bots-that-feed-ai-models-by-scraping-your-website/
Thanks Owlroost. I’ve seen this before and will be implementing it on my site. Unfortunately, the scrapped article was something I had published elsewhere so I didn’t have much control over things.
A long overdue update to my blogroll. Lots of other interesting things to add, though.
I just saw the listing for my site and wanted to say that you've made my night- "one of those sites you can just get lost in" has been a goal for me, and it means a lot to hear it from someone else.
No worries, that was honestly the most accurate description I could think of :-)
It's for Halloween! If you inspect the alt text it says it's a Halloween mask
Yeah I found that too. Bit of a random choice for halloween haha
